Proper hygiene may prevent sore eyes. Frequent washing of your eyes with clean water may provide temporary relief from the itches and burning sensation. It can also help in cleansing the eyes of watery mucoid discharges caused by sore eyes. But it is not advisable to use plain water, as it has impurities, which may father aggravate the infection.

Quack cures like washing sore eyes with urine salt and water or kalamansi, may do more harm than good. And using an ice pack will numb you eyes, not cure them of the virus. Anti-redness has vasoconstrictors that take the redness out by acting on the blood vessels. But it does not act on the cause of sore eyes, and is intended only for occasional use. A person inflicted with sore eyes needs and eye drop for frequent cleansing and temporally relief of sore eye discomfort.
